EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES IN RURAL AFRICA IS ESSENTIAL TO THE PRESERVATION OF ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS

About:

Elephants, Rhinos & People (ERP) protects Southern Africa’s wild elephants and rhinos by helping to alleviate poverty in rural communities adjacent to threatened elephant and rhino populations. We also implement tactical interventions to combat the poaching problem, such as sustainable alternatives as a source of community income, elephant relocations and drought relief programs.

ERP brings over 30 years of experience in community relations, poverty alleviation, and impact investment in infrastructure, to achieve sustainable, non-lethal wildlife conservation. ERP’s parent company, Group Elephant, donates 1% of its own revenue to cover all of ERP’s operational expenses, and to fund projects.

ERP Namibia:

ERP recently established ERP Namibia to expand ERP’s activities outside of South Africa. Tasked with the establishment and the running thereof is Tinus Hansen, a highly experienced local conservationist.

Melorane ERP Game Reserve:

Through our 90-year lease of the community-owned property, the Melorane ERP Game Reserve has become our flagship project. We aim to franchise this model into many other conservation areas.

All our Types of ERP Projects

ERP is run with business discipline, and we pursue a broad range of potential solutions, working directly with communities as well as with partners who are best positioned to help.

“We are called Elephants, Rhinos & People (ERP), because we protect elephants and rhinos in the wild, but we adopt a somewhat unconventional approach to doing that. The root of the problem is poverty. The people executing the poaching to sell horns and tusks are poor people with few other choices to survive, and if we can make it in their best interests economically to protect elephants and rhinos, they will do that more effectively than anybody else can.”

Group Elephant

ERP Air Wing

Establish a fleet of aircraft to fly anti-poaching patrols, herd-monitoring missions, and provide supplies over the vast area of land.

The fleet will be based at Swakopmund airport (FYSM), a centrally based towered airport, in the west of Namibia.

DONOR OPPORTUNITY
Establish an initiative with a mechanism to sustain it without continuous donor funding.
100% of donor funding will go to the establishment of the initiative. All overhead expenses during Phase 1 will be covered by Group Elephant’s ongoing 1% of revenue donation.
Donors who would like to target their donations to specific items can personalize it e.g., name an aircraft.
