Day 1: Arrival Bird Island
Arriving at Bird Island could not be easier. There is one daily charter flight from Mâhe Island that leaves at 10:30am. Your arrival time is perfect for a quick orientation and unpack before enjoying a buffet lunch. Once lunch has settled get all the information from the local staff who will tell you about where the latest turtles have been found and nesting. The Hawksbill turtles can be seen laying during the day which gives you the best opportunity to get images with natural lighting. Search the beaches for any signs until sunset then head for a refreshing shower before dinner and over night in your cottage.
Day 2 & 3: These two full days are moulded by you. You are the one who plans your own day. Searching the beaches for the Turtles or snorkelling in the waves. The island and surrounds are full of marine life and seeing different ray and fish species is almost guaranteed.
The harder you work the more animals you will find. Our best itinerary was to wake early before sunrise and head out looking for possible hatchlings emerging or catching the last green turtles returning to the ocean after laying their eggs. Head for breakfast around 9. A short break then heading back to the beaches in search of more turtles. This is also a good time for snorkelling. The earlier the better. As the day heats up the wind will change and this can make the waters less calm.
Head back for lunch and escape some of the mid day heat with a short break. Before heading back mid afternoon in search of more nesting turtles. The Hawksbills seemed to nest between 3-6pm, so this is a good time to walk the island and see one emerging from the ocean. This is not guaranteed but it was the time when we tended to see them.
After enjoying yet another sunset on the beach head back to your cottage for a refreshing shower before making your way to the bar for a well deserved cold drink and dinner. If you are feeling up to it a 2 hr night walk will give you the best chance of seeing the green turtles coming to nest. They are mainly night nesters. We had to be patient but it was well worth the extra hours! 4 different green turtles came onto the beach in a 2-3 hour period between 9:30pm and 12am.
Day 4: Departure.
Enjoy your last sunrise walk on the beach. Hopefully seeing the last remaining hatchlings emerging from their nests. Return to your cottage for a shower and then onto the dinning room for breakfast. A relaxed check out and departure on your charter flight back to Mâhe Island and onward journey. As many of the international flights leave early hours of the morning the following day we suggest a day room at a nearby hotel to have a final afternoon on the beach and sun downer drinks before dinner and check out. Transfer back to the airport and on your onward journey.
